PILOT, FEBRUARY 1999

Seventy-two-year-old private pilot Donald Kuhn dodged traffic to land his Cessna Cardinal on Interstate 95 when he ran out of fuel. He'd been en route to his home base at Titusville from Daytona Beach, where he had been forced by fog to night stop while returning from a mercy mission carrying a heart patient to Miami. An FBO brought fuel, the fire department supervised refuelling, the norida Highway Patrol stopped traffic, and Kuhn was safely on his way. Asked what he'd learned from the experience Kuhn replied candidly, "Put more fuel in it!"
